WHERE THE WORLD'S DAY BEGINS



There’s a small Pacific island where each new day officially begins—and most of the world has never heard of it. Where the World’s Day Begins is a promotional film created with BYU–Hawaii’s Hospitality & Tourism Management program to spotlight Kiritimati (Christmas Island), Kiribati: a remote atoll known to sport fishermen, but largely invisible to everyone else.

Working alongside local partners and HTM students, this project set out to reimagine the island’s story—from an obscure fly-fishing secret to a once-in-a-lifetime destination, as the first inhabited place on Earth to greet the rising sun. Through student-shot visuals, student narration, and the voices of the people who call Kiritimati home, the film invites viewers to see why this “hidden” island deserves a much bigger place in the world’s heart.

This film anchors the broader First Sunrise campaign, designed to reposition Kiritimati as a unique, sunrise-first destination for global travelers.
